Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen was named the WNBA’s Western Conference player of the week for games ending Sunday.
That means Lynx players have won both such awards so far this season; Maya Moore won for Week 1 after opening the season scoring 30 or more points in her first four games.
Whalen, who won the award for the sixth time in her career, had a strong week while helping the Lynx (7-0), the league’s only undefeated team, to a 3-0 mark during the week. Whalen scored 22 points – including a key jumper from the corner late in the game – in a Memorial Day victory in Chicago. She had 19 points, five rebounds and three assists in Minnesota’s victory over San Antonio at Target Center Friday. In Sunday’s rematch in San Antonio, Whalen had 14 points and 10 assists in the 87-79 victory. It was the ninth points-assists double-double in a Lynx uniform. Whalen is currently fifth in the league in assists (5.4), 10th in scoring (16.3) and second among guards in rebounds (4.1). She has scored in double figures in all seven games.
Indiana guard Briann January won the award for the Eastern Conference. January, who leads the league in three-point shooting percentage (71.4 o 15-for-21 shooting) and leads the Fever in scoring (15.8) had back-to-back 20-point games in victories over Connecticut and New York.
