MADISON, Wis. — The latest report on deaths in Wisconsin shows that the death rate held steady in 2012, with heart disease and cancer once again the leading causes.
The Department of Health Services report released this week shows that 8.4 people per 1,000 died in 2012, the most recent year data is available. That rate is the same as it was in 2011.
The total number of deaths in 2012 was 48,225. That is 125 more than the previous year.
Heart disease and cancer combined accounted for 47 percent of total deaths among Wisconsin residents. The third leading cause was accidents.
Among both men and women up to age 44, accidents was the leading cause of death. After that, cancer is the leading cause.
