A bill that would allow the state's female veterans to have their own license plates was signed into law by Gov. Mark Dayton on Friday.
The measure, which had been sought for several years by women veteran advocates, will be available starting Jan. 1, 2015. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs and a working group of female veterans will help design the plates, which will say "Woman Veteran" on them.
Since the effort began in 2011, the number of female veterans in Minnesota has grown from 23,000 to 29,000. Women vets seeking the plates would pay the same $10 charged for other veteran plates. Seven other states have plates for female veterans. Four states have bills in the works.
