The week ahead: 140th Kentucky Derby

What: First of this year's three Triple Crown horse races

When: Next Saturday, 5:24 p.m. post time (TV: Ch. 11)

Where: Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Race distance: 1¼ miles

Who's racing: A full field of 20 3-year-olds is expected. Draw day is Wednesday, when the starting spots are determined.

One to watch: California Chrome is expected to be the favorite based on the dominating form he's shown on the West Coast. He's trained by Art Sherman. At 77, Sherman could become the oldest trainer to win the Derby.

About the Triple Crown: Only 11 horses have swept the series and none since Affirmed in 1978. Fifty horses have finished one win shy of the Triple.
