SALT LAKE CITY — A man who was fatally shot by a U.S. marshal while attacking a witness during a federal trial in Utah this week promised the judge at the start of the hearing that he behave.

A court transcript of Monday's hearing in Salt Lake City shows that U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell asked Siale Angilau if he would be on his best behavior at the start of his jury trial. The 25-year-old Angilau responded, "Yeah."

The transcript shows that later, while a convict serving time in prison testified about how the "Tongan Crip Gang" recruits members, an unknown person said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa."

The transcript notes that's when Angilau rushed the witness. Authorities say he was shot in the chest, dying later.

The details of the transcript were first reported by The Salt Lake Tribune.
