Oakdale has have been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to urban forest management.

The city was named a 2013 Tree City USA by the foundation, a national nonprofit conservation and education organization.

"Communities achieve Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day," the organization said on its website.

More than 3,400 cities across the country have received the designation, Arbor Day officials said.

Oakdale, which has been named a Tree City for the past 19 years, will hand out trees to residents who attend the city's Arbor Day ceremony, a tradition that dates 40 years, according to a city news release. This year's event will be held on Saturday, April 26, at Richard Walton Park, 1584 Hadley Av., Oakdale (next to City Hall), the release said.
