NEW HOLSTEIN, Wis. — Residents have been allowed back home after a major gas main break forced the evacuation of some homes in New Holstein.

Police Capt. Jeff Hebl (HEE'-buhl), who is the city's emergency management director, says a road construction crew hit a high-pressure line at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Hebl says 30 homes were evacuated as a precaution, and the outage affected about 700 residents in the town of about 3,500.

He says no one was hurt and there was no explosion. A shelter that was set up in the high school has been shut down.

Residents returned to their homes around 8 p.m. Hebl says Wisconsin Public Service is working to restore gas service.

New Holstein is about 40 miles south of Green Bay.
