It’s a melding of two successful events. Kinda.
Last summer, Trampled by Turtles and Atmosphere teamed up for a well-attended mini-festival at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth, TBT’s hometown. And Soundset, a daylong hip-hop festival, has had a successful run at Canterbury Park for five years, drawing a record 28,000 fans in 2013.
So here is this year’s new idea: Festival Palomino, headlined by Trampled by Turtles and featuring the Head and the Heart, Low, Charles Bradley and others set for Sept. 20 at Canterbury Park.
Unlike Soundset and the Vans Warped Tour, which are held on a grassy field next to Canterbury’s parking lots, Palomino will be held on the lawn inside the horse racing track — the same site as such defunct festivals as Lilith Fair and KDWB’s Last Chance Summer Dance.
Palomino is being organized by Trampled by Turtles along with First Avenue and Rose Presents, which stages Soundset and Warped.
“As a band, Trampled by Turtles always envisioned creating a Minnesota festival featuring the music of some of our favorite musicians,” TBT singer Dave Simonett said in a statement.
The two-stage festival also will feature Hurray for the Riff Raff, Field Report, the Apache Relay, Spirit Family Reunion and Erik Koskinen as well as an artist village, food trucks and a craft-beer garden.
General-admission tickets, priced at $37, will go on sale at 11 a.m. Friday at ticketweb.com, the Electric Fetus and the Depot Tavern in Minneapolis. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets at $90. Parking is free for everyone.
