Wisconsin officials: Calls about Powerball winnings likely a scam

MADISON, Wis. — If someone calls and says you're eligible for unclaimed Powerball prizes, Wisconsin officials warn that it's most likely a scam.
The state's consumer-protection agency says the scam is unusual because the caller seems to be setting up the consumer for future scams.
The agency says the caller tells residents they might be eligible for Powerball prizes, and asks them to pick some numbers. Later the caller calls back and says they've won a third or fourth prize worth millions of dollars.
However, where most scammers ask for money to cover fictitious fees or taxes, these scammers ask questions about the residents' investments and home values. That information tells the scammer the consumer has money and may be an easy target.
The agency has additional information on its website.
