An Oakdale man was convicted Tuesday in the death last summer of a St. Paul bar owner who was murdered over a $20 pool table fee.

Yia Her, 27, was convicted in Ramsey County District Court of all counts against him: aiding and abetting second-degree murder and two counts of aiding and abetting attempted second-degree murder.

Vone Moua, 45, owner of Malina's Sports Bar, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of June 9 after Her became upset that he was unable to use the full $20 he paid for a pool table by closing time.

Her had gone to the bar with his brother-in-law, Cheng Vang. Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Dawn Bakst said that after Vang left, an upset Her called him to return and to bring a gun.

Vang, 23, pleaded guilty in February to shooting three men that day, including Moua. Bakst told jurors in her opening statements last week that Her was just as culpable.

"This defendant didn't pull the trigger … but he may as well have," Bakst said of Her's actions. "These two were working as a team."

Her's attorney, Michael Davis, told jurors that as Her tried to talk with Moua, the bar owner and a group of men "swarmed" and "overwhelmed" him.

"Yia Her was being squeezed into a corner by a group of men," Davis said. "That was aiding and abetting Cheng Vang?"

Bakst said Vang pressed his gun into Moua's head and fired. Another bullet entered a second victim under the arm and lodged in his neck, where it remains today. A third man was grazed by a bullet.

Moua's pregnant wife was at the bar that night.

Vang is scheduled to be sentenced April 7. No sentencing date has been set for Her.
