LOS ANGELES — Tom Bergeron is leaving "America's Funniest Home Videos" at the end of next season, but William Shatner is not quitting Twitter.
The two became linked when Bergeron announced this week that he would step down as host of the show next year. That prompted Shatner to tweet that he was inspired by Bergeron to tweet no more.
But that was only a shared joke with his pal Bergeron, according to Shatner's publicist, Putnam & Smith. The "Star Trek" actor, a prolific tweeter, has nearly 1.8 million followers.
The proof Shatner is still tweeting is online. Among his messages Thursday was one calling attention to National Coconut Torte Day and National Potato Chip Day, both this week. "Cake and chips," Shatner posted on Twitter.
Bergeron, however, is serious about leaving "America's Funniest Home Videos," spokeswoman Alejandra Cristina said.
"As 'Doctor Who' fans know, every so often a regeneration is a good thing," Bergeron said in a statement.
But he and some others at "Home Videos" are pitching a new series idea to ABC, Cristina said, adding that the proposal is in its early stages and details were unavailable.
Bergeron also is host of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars."
