US stocks sink; Dow heads for fourth straight loss

Stocks are turning sharply lower in afternoon trading as tensions flare up over Russia's presence in Ukraine.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 180 points, or 1.1 percent, to 16,163 in as of 1:15 p.m. Thursday. It was down as much as 209. The Dow is headed for its fourth consecutive loss. It's down 290 points so far this week.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 17 points, or 0.9 percent, to 1,851. The Nasdaq composite fell 56 points, or 1.3 percent, to 4,266.

Bond prices rose as traders shifted money into safer assets. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.66 percent from 2.73 percent late Wednesday.
