AUSTIN, Texas — Dallas dental mogul and former major GOP donor David Alameel remains atop the field seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, but has not yet secured enough votes to avoid a runoff.
Alameel had won about 48 percent of the votes with 85 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night. But he had not topped 50 percent to avoid a runoff against one of four little-known candidates.
Born in Lebanon, Alameel won the endorsement of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Wendy Davis. He spent $4.5 million running unsuccessfully for Congress in 2012 and long donated generously to both parties. But he now says the GOP is too extreme.
The Associated Press had called the race for Alameel, but uncalled it after a county's results had been miscounted.
