EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The driver of a van that struck and killed a man plowing snow with his all-terrain vehicle in Eau Claire is behind bars.
Police say the man behind the wheel is a repeat drunken driver who was intoxicated when he struck the 74-year-old victim and fled the scene. Investigators say the victim and his ATV were in the road when he was struck Monday about 5 p.m.
The man was taken to Mayo Health Systems in Eau Claire where he was pronounced dead. Authorities say several citizens followed the van as it fled the scene and Eau Claire County Sheriff's deputies made an arrest near Highway 312.
Police are recommending charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, hit and run involving death and drunken driving-fourth offense against the 65-year-old van driver.
