It appears that Minnesota high school volleyball star Alyssa Goehner will get the chance to show her stuff in her home state after all. The only question now appears to be whether she will do it once a year with Iowa or all season long as a Gopher.

Goehner, an outside hitter who led Lakeville North to two Class 3A state championships in five varsity seasons, had signed Marquette University. But when the coach who recruited Goehner there, Bond Shymansky, was named coach at Iowa, she sought her release from her binding National Letter of Intent. It was granted Tuesday.

“It’s opening up other opportunities for me and that’s exciting,” said the 5-11 Goehner, the Star Tribune’s Metro Player of the Year the past two seasons.

She also was prepvolleyball.com’s sophomore and junior national player of the year and was a finalist for the senior award.

Goehner said the two schools of primary interest to her now are Minnesota, where she long desired to play, and Iowa, where Shymansky went.

She visited Minnesota on Wednesday and was planning on visiting Iowa later in the week.

“The best thing about Marquette was the academic opportunity,” she said. “I like both Iowa and Minnesota. They’re both big state schools. Right now, I like Minnesota. They’ve been really nice, and I’ve talked to them a lot. It seems like if I’m going to a state school, it should be in my home state. But I haven’t made a decision yet.”
