MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fifth-seeded Marinko Matosevic and No. 7 Michal Przysiezny, the only two seeded players in action Monday, were both ousted at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championship.
Matosevic of Australia lost 6-3, 6-2 to Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic in an afternoon match. American Michael Russell then beat Przysiezny of Poland 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
In night action, Tim Smyczek of the United States, outdueled Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted almost two hours. Smyczek held a 5-3 lead in the opening set, but lost the next three games. Smyczek pulled even to send the set to a tiebreaker before Kyrgios, an 18-year-old wild card entry from Australia, came out on top.
Smyczek broke Kyrios' serve to win the second set and then opened the deciding set by winning the first three games. That was enough of an advantage to move on despite being broken by Kyrios in the seventh game.
Vesely, ranked 81st in ATP singles, took 1:11 to defeat Matosevic, the 55th-ranked player.
Russell, who had lost his only previous match this year, dominated after dropping the first set. Przysiezny lost for the seventh time in eight matches this year.
Top-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan and second-seeded Feliciano Lopez of Spain will play their opening matches later this week.
