Missing man is found frozen under a porch

A man missing since leaving a bar late on an extremely cold night in his Iron Range town in early January was found frozen to death a month later under a resident's porch near where he was last seen, authorities said Tuesday.

The body of Andrew C. Kanian, 41, of Virginia, Minn., was discovered about 1:45 p.m. Monday under the porch of the home in the 300 block of 3rd Street S., police said.

"Mr. Kanian was intoxicated on the evening of January 2nd, and it appears that he crawled under the porch area, fell asleep and froze," Police Chief Dennis Benz said.

Temperatures early Jan. 3 ranged from the upper 20s below zero to the upper teens below zero, with winds largely calm.

Crash victim drove into oncoming traffic

A motorist crossed into oncoming traffic southeast of Rosemount, collided with an SUV and suffered fatal injuries, authorities said Tuesday.

Susanne E. Preda, 39, of Roseville, was removed from life support Monday at Regions Hospital, according to the Dakota County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred about 7:55 p.m. Friday along 160th Street near Barbara Avenue in Empire Township, according to the Sheriff's Office. Three people in the SUV were treated for minor injuries.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Preda was westbound on 160th and "abruptly crossed the centerline directly in front" of the eastbound SUV. The SUV struck the car toward the rear of the passenger side and spun it into a ditch.

Deputies found Preda belted in, unconscious and without a pulse. An off-duty Hastings firefighter began resuscitation that revived Preda's heart.
