TORONTO — DeMar DeRozan scored a career-high 40 points, Greivis Vasquez had 17 and the Toronto Raptors snapped a two-game losing streak by beating the Dallas Mavericks 93-85 on Wednesday night.
Jonas Valanciunas had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Raptors, who overcame a 21-point, first-quarter deficit.
Monta Ellis had 21 points and Jose Calderon and Brandan Wright each had 13 for Dallas, but the Mavericks hurt themselves with 21 turnovers, including nine in the fourth quarter.
Dallas played without forward Dirk Nowitzki, who got the night off to rest as the Mavericks played for the 11th time in 18 days. Jae Crowder started in place of Nowitzki, 34, who missed his second game this season. Nowitzki sat out a Dec. 14 win over Milwaukee due to illness.
Toronto guard Kyle Lowry came in averaging more than 18 points per game in January, but missed his first nine field goal attempts and didn't find the scoresheet until making a pair of free throws at 9:12 of the fourth.
Lowry was fouled again at 5:13 after a Dallas turnover, making one of two to tie it at 80-80 with 5:13 left.
DeRozan converted a three-point play to put Toronto up 85-82 with 3:38 left, but Wright answered with a jump hook.
Amir Johnson hit a 3 on Toronto's next possession, causing Dallas to call timeout. After Wright made one of two from the line, Johnson missed an alley-oop dunk, but was still under the Mavericks basket when Vasquez stole a wayward pass by Ellis. Vasquez fed Johnson for the slam, putting Toronto up 90-85.
Vasquez picked off an errant pass by Calderon on the next possession and DeRozan reached the 40-point plateau with a fast-break dunk, putting the Raptors up 92-85 with 1:48 remaining.
Calderon scored 10 points in the first, eight of them during a 13-0 Dallas run, as the Mavericks surged to a 34-15 lead after one quarter. DeRozan had 12 points for Toronto in the first, making four of six attempts, but the rest of the Raptors combined to shoot 1 for 13 in a wretched opening.
Dallas called timeout at 9:18 of the second after Toronto started the quarter on an 8-2 spurt, but the stoppage did little to slow the Raptors down. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle called for time again at 6:58 after a 3 by Terrence Ross shaved the Dallas lead to 38-32. Vasquez scored 11 points in the second and the Raptors took advantage of seven Dallas turnovers to cut the deficit to 51-46 at halftime.
DeRozan scored 15 in the third but Ellis had 13 for the Mavericks, who took a 73-68 lead into the fourth.
