Trouble on the high seas

"Captain Phillips," a film about piracy off the coast of Africa, is such an impressive dramatic achievement that it comes as a shock when it gets even better, during a devastating final scene in which Tom Hanks single-handedly dismantles Hollywood notions of macho heroism in one shattering, virtually wordless sequence. That moment, as purely emotional as what went before has been kinetic, makes "Captain Phillips" yet another Paul Greengrass masterpiece.

The DVD and Blu-ray (Sony, $31-$41) include commentary by Greengrass and a three-part behind-the-scenes look at the film's production and its inspiration: the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama cargo ship.

Shed some light on music

A product that grabbed attention at the recent Consumer Electronics Show was the AwoX Striimlight B-10 light bulb and Bluetooth speaker ($99, www.awox.com).

The multifunctional, eco-friendly LED light bulb has an integrated Bluetooth speaker to stream wireless music right from the light fixture.

An included IR remote turns the light on and adjusts the speaker volume. The setup consists of screwing in the light bulb and then pairing the speaker with any Bluetooth-enabled device.

As for the long-lasting LED lighting, it's equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent bulb. McClatchy News Service

App

Lock out interlopers

Android has plenty of ways to make your phone's lock screen more secure, but once that's bypassed, there's no built-in way to lock individual apps. The free App Lock (Smart App Protector) fills this void.

It packs an impressive list of features. You can lock apps by password (character or number), pattern or gesture, and use that to lock your whole phone, too. There's also an option to set up different passwords for different apps. It's pretty easy to set up.

One of the cool features is that App Lock can fake out someone who is looking to access an app. If a stranger were to tap a locked app, it can fake Android's default prompt "Unfortunately, has stopped working." Tap OK and you'll be returned to the home screen. But hold down OK and you'll be taken to the password window, where you can unlock the app.
