A 20-year-old woman died when the snowmobile she was riding on crashed into an unoccupied ice-fishing trailer on a western Wisconsin lake, authorities said Thursday.

The crash occurred about 10 p.m. Wednesday on Bone Lake, southeast of Luck, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman suffered "severe head injuries" despite wearing a helmet, the Sheriff's Office said in a prepared statement, and she died despite efforts to revive her.

Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of operating a snowmobile while intoxicated.

The snowmobile was one of two heading north together between the lake's islands and its eastern shore, the Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Pete Johnson said that the machine carrying the victim struck the "big, enclosed trailer" with a "glancing hit" at what he suspects was an excessive speed.
