BOSTON — The Boston Globe says its publisher plans to step down as part of a business transition under new owner John Henry.
The Globe reports (http://bo.st/1aIq0Tu) that publisher Christopher Mayer wrote in an email to employees Wednesday that new ownership brings "a new way to look at tackling the challenges that face us."
Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox, bought the Globe from the New York Times Co. in October. He praised Mayer's "extraordinary leadership" and said he's asked Mayer to stay indefinitely as a senior adviser.
Mayer said he and Henry will work together for a smooth transition.
Mayer has been at the Globe 30 years, and publisher of the newspaper and its websites since 2010.
Mayer is credited with returning the Globe to profitability.
