MILWAUKEE — The city of Milwaukee plans to close non-essential services Monday because of the expected dangerously cold temperatures.

Mayor Tom Barrett made the announcement Friday.

Barrett urged residents to take the threat seriously. The National Weather Service says wind chill temperatures in the Milwaukee area could reach 55 degrees below zero.

The mayor says all essential and emergency services will be operating, including snow and ice removal as well as the City Call Center. But he says non-essential services will be closed, including garbage and recycling services and City of Milwaukee Health Department health centers.

All Milwaukee County non-essential offices also will be closed Monday. But the Courthouse Complex and Children's Court will remain open, and jurors scheduled for jury duty Monday should still report.
