TV picks for Jan. 1:  "The Exes,” Leah Remini, "Troubadours,” Vienna Philharmonic

Classic combination

Julie Andrews may not have gotten called back for the recent live production of “The Sound of the Music,” but she’s invited to return as host for “From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration” (7 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2) for the fifth time. Daniel Barenboim will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic with additional help from the Vienna State Ballet.

They’ve got a friend

A repeat of “Troubadours: Carole King/James Taylor and the Rise of the Singer-Songwriter” (8:30 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2) is not only a great way to celebrate two pop icons, but also offers a fascinating history lesson into the California sound that emerged out of one of the country’s best nightclubs, the Troubadour.

Coming off the bench

Kristen Johnston’s bout with a rare autoimmune disorder landed her in the Mayo Clinic and forced her to take a couple weeks off from “The Exes” (9 p.m., TV Land). Leah Remini, who showed off her comedy chops on “The King of Queens” and by putting up with all those catty women on “The Talk,” steps in for a multi-episode arc.
