A handful of Xcel Energy customers in Minneapolis were going without power in subzero weather Monday afternoon as scattered outages popped up even as the utility mopped up a large area that lost its electricity in south Minneapolis on Sunday night.
The utility reported six new customers without power in south Minneapolis and the Prospect Park area, with the longest outage dating to 5:45 a.m. All were scheduled to get power back by 5 p.m.
Spokesman Tom Hoen said the utility may not know Monday what caused nearly 4,500 customers to lose power in south Minneapolis just after 8 p.m. Sunday. The largest area without power on Sunday was south of E. 38th Street to the east and west of Hiawatha Avenue. Most of those regained power by 11 p.m., the utility said, with almost 50 more getting electricity back by noon..
The biggest cluster of those without power Monday morning was mapped by Xcel to be located just east of Cedar Avenue, north of Lake Nokomis.
Hoen attributed the problem to equipment failure, most likely in feeder lines, although an investigation will wait until all service is restored.
(A problem with a power line in that area was captured in a YouTube video posted by Tesha Christensen.)
