MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee alderman who serves as honorary consul to South Africa from Wisconsin says Nelson Mandela "was a shining example to us all."

Alderman Joe Davis Sr. said Thursday he's "deeply saddened" to hear of Mandela's death. The first black president of South Africa died at age 95.

In a statement, Davis says Mandela's convictions "were tested beyond the bounds of comprehension, and he emerged from his trials more resolute where lesser men —many men —would have given up hope."

Davis calls Mandela "a shining example to us all, not only as an inspiring beacon of courage, but as a lesson in forgiveness as well."

He says he sends his regrets to the people of South Africa, "who today lost their greatest leader."
