Gene Hackman played “Popeye” Doyle in 1971’s “The French Connection.”
TV picks for Oct. 24: Adam Devine, "Blackfish,” Gene Hackman

I wish someone close to Gene Hackman would convince him to take a break from painting and return to acting. Until that dream day, we can re-watch 1971’s “The French Connection” (6:45 p.m., Sundance), proof that you don’t need a lot of special effects to make a great action movie.
Whale of a tale
There might not be a “sharknado” in real life, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have trouble down under. “Blackfish” (8 p.m., CNN) examines Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. How much is SeaWorld entertainment to blame?
Who needs a nightclub when you have a massive back yard? “Adam Devine’s House Party” (11:30 p.m., Comedy) finds the “Workaholics” star hosting up-and-coming comedians at an L.A. mansion where they entertain guests by doing stand-up, which sounds slightly more annoying than setting up a karaoke machine.
