Wis. DNR to hold hearing on Lake Superior nets

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants input on new Lake Superior commercial fishing trap net rules.
Right now commercial fishers can place nets in what's known as the restricted use area, an area between Houghton Point and Long Island Point and between Long Island Point and the southernmost point on Madeleine Island during the summer. DNR officials say the nets' use creates safety risks for boaters.
The new rules would limit fishers to using a single trap per commercial license in the area; exclude nets from a so-called zone of safe passage through the area; and require fishers to remove their nets within three days of the close of the fishing season.
The DNR has set a public hearing on the rules for Nov. 7 in Bayfield.
