MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Assembly has passed a bill that would legalize so-called pedal pubs.

Milwaukee city officials contend drinking on the rolling bars violates a state law prohibiting drinking in vehicles. Rep. Jeff Stone, a Greendale Republican, authored a bill that would have allowed municipalities to allow drinking on pedal pubs.

The Assembly small business committee offered a substitute bill that would allow drinking on pedal pubs unless a municipality adopts ordinances negating the exception.

The Assembly passed the substitute bill on a voice vote Tuesday evening. The measure goes next to the state Senate.
