MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin System plans to move to a new high-speed data network over the next 18 months.
The state budget requires UW to disengage with broadband provider WiscNet by January. Republicans had complained the system was improperly subsidizing WiscNet by providing infrastructure and employees.
System officials told legislators in a briefing Tuesday UW is no longer represented on the WiscNet board and no UW employees will be working for the provider by January.
The system expects to spend about $33 million over the next five years to build and maintain the new network, about $13 million more than the cost of staying with WiscNet over the same period. System officials want lawmakers to extend the deadline for disengaging with WiscNet 2015 to ensure service during the transition.
