DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Organizers say a Detroit Lakes area ski hill should be back in business by winter 2014 — 10 years after it closed.
The Detroit Mountain Recreation Area has already broken ground on a new chalet, and the group is just $500,000 shy of its fundraising goal to pay for the $7.5 million project.
Lead fundraiser Mark Fritz tells The Forum (http://bit.ly/15getxs ) that the revamped Detroit Mountain will attract skiers from the entire region, not just locals, because the nearest ski hills are otherwise at least 80 miles away from the Fargo-Moorhead metro area.
Plans call for two new chair lifts, a tubing hill and a terrain park filled with jumps and rails for more adventurous skiers and snowboarders. There will also be cross-country skiing and mountain biking trails.
