RACINE, Wis. — A Sturtevant man has been sentenced to 38 years in prison for fatally shooting a man in a darkened pole barn last year.
Forty-seven-year-old Scott Mertins Sr. will serve another 13 years on extended supervision.
Mertins was sentenced Monday in Racine County for firing the shot that killed 54-year-old Robert Greene, formerly of Mount Pleasant. Greene and his girlfriend were in town attending a funeral when Greene was shot in Yorkville on Aug. 26, 2012.
The Journal Times (http://bit.ly/18qjU7D ) reports Mertins said at his sentencing he didn't mean to harm anyone.
Greene was asleep in the pole barn with his girlfriend when he got up to investigate a noise and was shot.
The defense maintained Mertins had been drinking when he decided to retrieve some belongings stored in the barn.
