A couple heading the wrong way in their car on a west-central Minnesota highway crashed head-on with an SUV and were killed, authorities said.
The collision occurred about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday on Hwy. 108, just west of Henning in Otter Tail County, according to the State Patrol.
Killed were the 34-year-old driver from Deer Creek, Minn., and his 26-year-old wife, the patrol said.
Surviving with serious injuries and taken to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo were the family’s 5-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. All four in the car were properly belted in. Their identities were being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Also seriously injured were the SUV’s driver, Laura J. Smith, 49, of Henning, and her husband, Grant D. Smith, 50. They were being treated at St. Cloud Hospital. They also were wearing seat belts.
The patrol has yet to explain why the car was heading south in the northbound lane when it struck the oncoming SUV along the two-lane highway about 40 miles north of Alexandria.
