As a player: A starter on the 1988 Kansas team that won the NCAA championship. Played professionally with Rockford and Grand Rapids in the CBA.

D-league background: Worked with NBA Commissioner David Stern for three years helping get the NBA Development League off the ground.

Before Wolves job: Spent 10 seasons with the Washington Wizards, most recently as the vice president of player personnel.

A bonus: The Wolves have been criticized in recent years for their lack of diversity in the front office. Wolves boss Flip Saunders said Newton’s hiring was a bonus in that regard, but stressed that Newton was “the best guy for the job.”
