A new bridge spanning the Lester River and a tunnel to Brighton Beach are the latest addition’s to Duluth’s Lakewalk along Lake Superior. Mayor Don Ness cut a ribbon to signal completion of the $2.5 million project on Friday. The city paid about one-third of the costs, with federal and state grants covering the balance.
After a summer of construction, the new tunnel will allow walkers and bikers to get to Brighton Beach without messing with truck and car traffic. Project engineer Patrick Loomis said residents have been so eager to test out the additions, they’ve been biking on blacktop still hot from paving.
While the Lester Park additions completes the Lakewalk, city planners have larger visions with a Cross-City Trail slated to connect the Lakewalk and the Willard Munger Trail in West Duluth. That project will enable walkers and bikers to traverse the city safely from west to east. The next round of bids on that 2.9-mile trail are expected by Sept. 12.
