DULUTH, Minn. — The Duluth City Council will consider settling a lawsuit brought by two evangelists who claimed they were denied free speech rights.
Steve Jankowski and Peter Scott sued after Duluth police ordered them to leave a holiday light display at Bayfront Park where they were preaching in November 2012.
A district court judge ruled the city was obligated to respect their right to free speech because the display was set up in a public place and no admission was charged. The city and the two preachers have been working to mediate a settlement.
The Duluth News Tribune (http://bit.ly/1dJqeiM ) says City Attorney Gunnar Johnson is recommending approval of a $177,500 settlement. The council will consider the recommendation Monday.
