RandBall's Fantasy Football Challenge: Week 1
- September 4, 2013 - 9:35 PM
Week 1 of the Page 2 Fantasy Football Challenge is upon us. Each week, a guest picker chooses a QB, WR and RB. This week’s guest is local fantasy football enthusiast Kristin Lodermeier. She is in five leagues this year and used last year’s fantasy winnings to finance a trip to London for the Vikings/Steelers game. She was allowed to pick any players she wanted. She picked head-to-head against Star Tribune writer Michael Rand, who was not allowed to pick anyone ranked in the top 10 by NFL.com experts at their positions:
Kristin Lodermeier’S WEEK 1 FANTASY PICKS
QB: Matt Ryan: Falcons
NFL.com fantasy QB rank: No. 8
Matt Ryan: I’m putting faith in the Falcons’ offensive line to keep Ryan upright against a passive New Orleans defense. Ryan should be able to spread out TDs among the most elite players in the game this week.
RB: Alfred Morris, Redskins
NFL.com fantasy RB rank: No. 8
Crossing my fingers I don’t get Shanahan’d and Morris starts the game. I expect Morris to run all over the Eagles’ new defensive scheme.
WR: Dez Bryant, Cowboys
NFL.com fantasy WR rank: No. 2
Which will the announcers talk about more: Bryant’s spectacular show or the amount of yards the Giants defense gave up to him? If Bryant can stay healthy, the Cowboys will be Super Bowl contenders.
MICHAEL RAND’s WEEK 1 FANTASY PICKS
QB: Matthew Stafford, Lions
NFL.com fantasy QB rank: No. 11
Local loyalty goes out the window when it comes to fantasy picks. Stafford, playing at home, figures to go for a bundle of yards against a young Vikings secondary.
RB: DeMarco Murray, Cowboys
NFL.com fantasy RB rank: No. 21
I like Murray as a breakout player this season, which probably means he already has a secret debilitating injury. I’m banking on him making it through Week 1 against a suspect Giants’ D.
WR: Reggie Wayne, Colts
NFL.com fantasy WR rank: No. 14
Reggie Wayne turns 35 this year, but after a 2011 dip with awful QBs, he rebounded to his previous form with Andrew Luck last season. I say that continues in this matchup against the Raiders.
SCOREBOARD recap of last year’s fantasy challenge
Winner: Guest pickers won nine of the 15 challenges last season.
Loser: The guy who stacked the deck against himself, Michael Rand.
Overall standings: We start over at 0-0 this year!
