An attendance record was set at the State Fair Sunday, as cool temperatures swept big crowds back to the event.
The fair reported that 236,197 people came through the gates Sunday. On the final Sunday of the fair the past two years, attendance was 210,836 and 229,943. The fair ends on Labor Day.
The crowds had dipped markedly last week during the sweltering heat. Tuesday's attendance, 94,076, was the lowest for any single day in the past six fairs. Fair vendors were worried about their receipts as people were too hot to eat much food. A weekend of bigger crowds was expected to help them catch up.
