CBSSports' Jason La Canfora reported that the Seattle Seahawks will release veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield today, fueling obvious speculation that the former Vikings Pro Bowler could return to Minnesota for one final season.
Winfield picked the Seahawks over the Vikings this offseason after the Vikings released him. The Vikings made a hard push to re-sign Winfield but he chose Seattle instead.
The move to bring Winfield back would make sense because he already knows the system, the coaching staff and is a respected leader inside Winter Park. And his family still lives here because his kids are in school in the Twin Cities.
And the Vikings have major questions at cornerback, particularly with Josh Robinson in the slot/nickel role. Winfield thrived in that role in recent years and could mentor Robinson, who is playing that position for the first time in his career.
Winfield has been bothered by a sore knee this training camp so the Vikings would need to feel comfortable that the problem won't linger and cause problems all season.
We'll see how this situation develops over the next few days. The Vikings must trim their roster to 53 by 5 p.m. Saturday. We'll keep you updated on roster moves throughout the day.
