The State Fair is underway, Labor Day is more than a week away, the weather is hot, and … Minneapolis schools are about to open a week earlier than many area districts.
Mayor R.T. Rybak and schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson will visit several city schools Monday to welcome students, teachers and staff members to the first day of the 2013-14 school year.
Rybak’s schedule wasn’t pinned down yet as of Friday, but Johnson will kick off her tour of schools at 8:30 a.m. at Hiawatha Community School-Howe Campus.
She also hopes to visit Lake Harriet, Folwell, Lyndale, Northeast and Loring schools.
The school district will welcome 31,000 students in grades 1-12 Monday and 3,400 new kindergarten students Wednesday.
Enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is expected to exceed 34,000 students, and high school enrollment is expected to increase for the first time since 2001.
