Maybe Kyle Gibson just isn't ready. Maybe another year removed from Tommy John surgery will make a difference. Or maybe he's never going to turn the corner and be a top-3 spot member of a Twins rotation.

Time will tell.

For now, we know this: Gibson has been demoted. And it was largely due to what happened to him the second time through the batting order this season.

Entering today, he had given up five runs this season while facing a team the first time through the order. That's good.

Entering today, he had given up 19 runs while facing a team the second time through the order. That's bad.

And today, the Mets were 4-for-8 with a walk the second time through the order. (In fairness, they hit him pretty well the first time through today, too).

For the season, opponents hit .405 with an OPS approaching 1.100 the second time through the order on Gibson (we added in today's numbers, which weren't factored in yet on that BR link). They worked him over, and he never worked more than six innings as a result.

He won't have the element of surprise going forward. He'll need a consistent "out" pitch from the first inning on. Time will tell if he has it.
