JANESVILLE, Wis. — Details have emerged about the tip that led authorities to dig for the remains of an 8-year-old Wisconsin girl missing for 66 years.
According to a search warrant affidavit, an 82-year-old Rock County man told authorities on July 30 he was picking berries with a friend in 1947 when they saw a fresh burial site.
The man was 16 at the time. WKOW-TV (http://bit.ly/19r4hEj) reports he also police a man on the property yelled and demanded they leave, so they ran off.
He told officers he remembered that Georgia Jean Weckler was missing not too long before that. She was abducted from near her family farm near Cambridge on May 1, 1947.
Investigators in Janesville dug up an undeveloped lot last week but found no trace of the girl.
