Practice snapshot

Five days into training camp, the pecking order at receiver remains in deference to the veterans. Running a majority of three-receiver sets, the Vikings have stuck with Jerome Simpson, Greg Jennings and second-year pro Jarius Wright in the slot. Rookie first-round draft pick Cordarrelle Patterson appears to be the fourth receiver, although his size and skill level suggests that will change. When is the question, not if.

Because the Vikings do a good job of mixing and matching receivers with quarterbacks, all the top receivers get ample opportunities to work on their timing with both Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel. One of the highlights Wednesday came during one-on-one drills when Patterson leapt high in the air against starting cornerback Chris Cook and showed the concentration to make a falling catch of a Ponder deep ball.

Preparing for victory

Talk about confidence and attention to detail. The Vikings practiced their victory formation Wednesday. As far as we could tell, no fans old enough to remember 1998 were harmed while watching the Vikings practice the art of taking a knee.

From the podium

A year ago, left tackle Matt Kalil's one-on-one matchups with Jared Allen were a storyline that was picked at daily throughout training camp. This year, Kalil often walks past reporters without a single request to stop and be interviewed. In the world of left tackles, drawing little to no attention is golden. That doesn't mean last year's No. 4 overall draft pick isn't motivated to improve upon a rookie Pro Bowl season. "Matt wants to be the best left tackle in the National Football League," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said.

Camp chatter

"He's got huge hands. He's running pretty good routes for a guy that just started a couple months ago. I think he's a guy who deserves to be on the field. We know what he can do with the ball in his hands. He looks good. He works his butt off. He's a guy who's always stayed after and asked the quarterbacks to throw him more so he can keep working." – Ponder, when asked after Joe Webb's transition from quarterback to receiver this offseason.
