Gunman described as lonely and angry

The gunman who went on a shooting rampage at his South Florida apartment building, killing six people, was a lonely man who spoke about having pent-up anger, those who knew him said Sunday. Pedro Vargas, 42, lived on the fourth floor of an apartment complex in the Miami suburb of Hialeah with his elderly mother. Police followed and exchanged gunfire with Vargas throughout the five-story apartment complex for eight hours on Saturday as terrified residents took cover in bathrooms and huddled with relatives.

U.S. drone strike kills at least six militants

At least six militants were killed and four injured after the latest U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's restive tribal belt, Pakistani intelligence officials and militant commanders said.The drones fired two missiles at a group of men shortly after they crossed the border from Afghanistan, where local commanders said they had been fighting U.S. and Afghan forces.An intelligence official indicated that a senior commander with a Pakistani Taliban faction led by Gul Bahadur, which has links with Al-Qaida, had been killed in the attack.

Thousands of Malians went to the polls in the country's first presidential election since a military coup last year, a vote that could deeply affect the future of democracy and militancy in this strategic West African nation. The rebels, joined by radical Islamists and fighters from Al-Qaida, swiftly overran northern Mali.

Prime minister's party wins narrow victory

After years of dominance in Cambodian politics, the party of Prime Minister Hun Sen won a relatively narrow victory in national elections as a resurgent opposition rode a wave of disenchantment with the prime minister's 28 years in power.Khieu Kanharith, the Cambodian information minister, reported a preliminary vote count: the governing party won 68 seats, or about 55 percent of the National Assembly's 123 seats. In the assembly being replaced, the governing party controlled 90 seats.

Tour bus plunges into ravine, killing 36

A tour bus filled with Italian pilgrims plunged off a highway into a ravine in southern Italy and smashed into several cars that had slowed in heavy traffic, killing at least 36 people, said police and rescuers. Flashing signs near Avellino, outside Naples, had warned of slowed traffic along the stretch of the A116 autostrada, a major highway crossing southern Italy.
