Theater spotlight: 'Les Misérables'
- July 27, 2013 - 3:42 PM
Opening: Composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil turned Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel about forgiveness, love and the law in revolutionary France into box-office gold. Their beloved musical, backed by producer Cameron Mackintosh, won eight Tonys in 1987 and ran for 16 years on Broadway. Director Tom Hooper’s film version, released last year, starred Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, a bread-stealing convict with a heart of gold who breaks parole and is chased relentlessly by Inspector Javert, played by Russell Crowe. But the show has never been a star vehicle. It has always been about the songs, including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “One More Day” and “Drink With Me.” This retooled tour version is making its penultimate stop before returning to Broadway. (7:30 p.m. Tue.-Thu., 8 p.m. Fri., 2 & 8 p.m. Sat., 1 & 6:30 p.m. next Sun., Orpheum Theatre, 910 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $39-$125, 1-800-982-2787 or hennepintheatretrust.org.)
