NEWARK, N.J. — A passenger plane has landed safely at Newark International Airport in New Jersey after the crew detected the smell of smoke in the cockpit.
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Steve Coleman says United Express Flight 4890 was headed for Pittsburgh.
The plane stopped on the runway and 27 passengers were evacuated as a precaution just after 11 a.m. Thursday.
There were four crewmembers aboard. Coleman says no one was injured.
The runway reopened less than an hour later.
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a DeHavilland DH-8, which is a turboprop plane.
Republic Airlines, which owns the plane, says maintenance crews are inspecting it.
