Two women were shot - one fatally - early Saturday in north Minneapolis after shots were fired from a vehicle that had pulled up along side their vehicle, according to police.

Just after 2 a.m., Minneapolis emergency dispatchers received a call from a person in a vehicle saying that friends had been shot at Washington Avenue North and 26th Avenue North and that they were being driven to Hennepin County Medical Center, police said.

When the two victims arrived at the hospital it was determined that four people had been in the car when another car pulled up next to them and someone fired shots into the victims' vehicle.

One woman died at HCMC, and the other sustained a life-threatening wound but is expected to survive, police said. The identity of the deceased will be released later by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The department's homicide unit is investigating and asking that anyone with information call 612-692-TIPS (8477).
