MONTREAL — The interim mayor of a Montreal suburb has resigned after denying allegations that he was extorted by a prostitute.

Laval mayor Alexandre Duplessis said Friday that his departure takes effect immediately.

Duplessis told reporters earlier Friday that he would not resign over news stories about unconfirmed allegations he was involved in an encounter with an escort that went awry.

Police have confirmed that a man has complained about being extorted by a prostitute on June 14, but they haven't identified the man.

Duplessis had replaced a scandal-plagued elected mayor. A new interim mayor will be chosen from the remaining group of city councilors next week.

Montreal's mayor stepped down last week over an unrelated fraud scandal.
