U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann said that Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down restrictions on federal benefits to gay couples violates “the hand of God.”
"Marriage was created by the hand of God,” the Minnesota Republican said in a statement. “No man, not even a Supreme Court, can undo what a holy God has instituted.”
Bachmann, an evangelical Christian who made opposition to same-sex marriage the centerpiece of her early political career, said the nation’s high court has joined a “trend” that reverses “thousands of years of recorded human history.”
"Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to join the trend, despite the clear will of the people’s representatives through DOMA,” she said in a reference to the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which denied federal tax, health and pension benefits to legally married same-sex couples.
Bachmann has announced she will not seek a fifth term in Congress, though she has vowed to stay involved in public life.
