Jessye Norman
Tuesday: Few opera singers have the stature and longevity of legendary soprano Jessye Norman. While she has been widely honored for a career that has included conquering principal roles in operas by Wagner, Strauss and Mozart, the Augusta, Ga., native more recently has returned to her gospel and jazz roots. She will share her tribute to American masters such as Duke Ellington and George Gershwin when she comes to the Schubert Club's International Artists series on Tuesday. There are no arias on the program for Norman's first appearance in the Twin Cities in 15 years. "Pigeonholes are only comfortable for pigeons," she has famously said.
