Gophers sophomore Ellis Mannon capped his season on the pommel horse with a second-place finish Sunday at the NCAA men's gymnastics championship at Penn State. Mannon posted a 14.900, second to Ohio State's Michael Newburger, who won the title with a 15.450.

Mannon, who was trying to become the first Gopher since Clay Strother in 2002 (pommel horse and floor exercise) to win an NCAA title, also earned All-America honors. Mannon, who was ranked No. 3 nationally in the event, placed third on pommel horse at the Big Ten Championships.

"Ellis has been so consistent on the pommel horse throughout the championship season," Gophers coach Mike Burns said. "His hard work and dedication have certainly paid off for him this season."

Mannon was the lone Gopher to advance to individual finals.

Olympian Sam Mikulak of Michigan won twice (parallel bars, high bar), and single titles went to Penn State's Trevor Howard, Newburger (pommel horse) and Illinois' Fred Hartville (vault).

• Hanna Nordquist tied for second place on balance beam and fellow freshman Lindsay Mable tied for fourth on floor exercise in the individual event finals at the NCAA women's championships in Los Angeles. Nordquist's runner-up finish is Minnesota's best ever on balance beam and the program's highest finish on any event since Marie Roethlisberger's national title on uneven bars in 1990.

• Gophers women's gymnastics coach Meg Stephenson was named National Coach of the Year and associate head coach Jenny Hansen and assistants Louie Johnson and Jim Stephenson were honored as assistant coaches of the year by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women.

Etc.

• The Gophers men's tennis team closed the regular season with a 7-0 home victory over Iowa. Senior Rok Bonin won at singles and doubles in his final home match for the Gophers, who tied Michigan for second place in the Big Ten.

• Sophomore Aria Lambert was the lone winner for the Gophers women's tennis team in a 6-1 loss at Iowa.
